FAQs and myths

Tell someone that you are thinking about emigrating and almost always they will give a view. Sometimes it is “That’s fantastic” – often it is “I don’t know if I would want to do that – what about giant spiders, the food, no beer, it’s too hot or too cold, ooh! it is so far away.”

Also there are those in the pub who know it all. “A mate of mine went on holiday and stayed there – he’s been there for years without a visa”. Or “if you don’t have a degree they are not interested”. Recently a client was told that “they don’t want Brits or Irish anymore”.

It does seem that people just like to put the dampers on things. It is true that emigrating is not for the faint hearted. It takes a lot of courage and commitment to make it work but for the majority of those that have done it they never look back – their dreams have come true.

Being from the UK or Ireland is good

We have a strong work ethic, our workforce is highly skilled and experienced and yes those with specific skills are sought after. We also speak the same language.

Family ties

Staying in touch is important for most of us and this is easily overcome with the ever cheaper cost of phonecalls, video technology and travel. We know that when family members do visit you in your new home you really spend some quality time together – you probably have more time together than before.

What about the children?

Involve your children in the whole process, emigrating is exciting, a real adventure. Children are very adaptable and make new friends easily.

My partner and I aren’t married

If you have lived together “as man and wife” then you may well be able to be included in an application. There are conditions to be met and it is important that we fully understand your situation to enable us to guide you on the best way forward.

Are the education and health systems good?

Yes – Very Good

How long does it take to go though the paperwork?

Immigration applications can take from a few months to several years to process. On average around a year but best to ask – send a ‘quick question email’ about the type of visa you may apply for eg Plumber to Australia.. answer 10 – 12 months.

Got a criminal conviction?

Being of good character is very important and if you have had problems in the past we need to know when completing your assessment. At the end of the day immigration make the decision.

Not being too well – have an ongoing condition?

If you have had a medical condition or have been ill we do need to know about it at the time you complete your assessment. The medical sections at immigration make the final decision.
